TDF today unveils the results of a study carried out jointly with Kantar on the potential of 5G Broadcast, an innovative technology that enables television to be received in optimal conditions on the move. The study reveals a real appetite among the public, and concludes that this is a major step forward for Digital Terrestrial Television, opening up new opportunities for channels.

A few months after the success of the Live Test 5G Broadcast launched during the Paris 2024 Olympics, the world's first large-scale 5G Broadcast experiment, TDF is now anticipating its deployment in collaboration with its publisher partners.

5G Broadcast technology enables people with compatible smartphones to receive linear TV programs without a Wi-Fi connection or mobile data consumption.

Kantar's groundbreaking survey reveals a strong public appetite for mobile viewing.

Conducted for TDF in January 2025 on a representative sample of 2045 French people over the age of 16, the survey reveals a strong craze for mobile TV outside the home:
● 24% of 15-49 year-olds watch classic TV programs live on their mobile at least once a month.
● Public transport is a key location for video consumption.
● More than 1 in 2 15-49 year-olds say they are ready to use 5G Broadcast to watch TV on the move.

High-performance, responsible technology

5G Broadcast combines performance and energy efficiency:
● It offers a smooth, latency-free experience, just like DTT.
● It allows TV to be consumed free of charge, without mobile data, a key benefit for the user.
● Relying on existing infrastructures, it could be available on nationwide coverage, ideal for live events and when traveling.
● Like DTT, it is a less energy-intensive technology than Internet networks, limiting its environmental impact.

Quality uses for a connected population

TDF has combined the results of the Kantar survey with those of Médiamétrie's benchmark "Global Video" survey, to produce projections for 5G Broadcast usage and audience. The results of this ground-breaking study were shared with leading DTT publishers:

● A younger, more urban population with an appetite for digital content will be able to access a mobile experience of unrivalled quality.
● An enriched mobile offering is made available with the activation of 5G Broadcast on smartphone: the quality and fluidity of DTT is combined with the natural interactivity of the smartphone, between linear and non-linear content, as well as individualized, seamless contextualization.
● This offering converges with the current trend towards mobile consumption of video content, while meeting user expectations.

In partnership with the channels and all the players in the broadcasting industry, TDF is actively preparing the future of the terrestrial platform, in line with changing usage patterns, a responsible approach to innovation and the preservation of DTT pluralism.

Karim El Naggar, Managing Director Audiovisual and Networks at TDF, states:

"At a time when mobile consumption of video content is becoming essential, mobile broadcasting of DTT channels represents an opportunity to give them direct, fluid access and, ultimately, to develop their audience. As the channels' technological and strategic partner, we continue to innovate alongside them to support usage and meet their needs: younger audiences, mobile use, control of the carbon footprint... 5G Broadcast is a solution that meets these challenges and that we are eager to deploy".

Jacques Donat-Bouillud, Director of Distribution at France Télévisions said:

"The 5G Broadcast experiment during the Paris Olympics, in which France Télévisions was a partner, showed us the potential of 5G Broadcast to support new uses, particularly for young audiences on the move. 5G Broadcast is an example of an environmentally-friendly technological innovation that enables France Télévisions to better serve its viewers."
