The TDF certification and 5G Broadcast platform: a physical infrastructure and advanced digital tools
A few months after the success of the 5G Broadcast live test carried out during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games - the world's first large-scale experiment with this technology - TDF is pursuing its commitment by setting up a unique system to support its gradual deployment in France, at the service of audiovisual and industry players.
This TDF 5G Broadcast certification platform is based on a center of expertise at the TDF technology campus in Les Lilas, France, incorporating advanced test infrastructures and a set of standardized software tools and protocols that will enable rigorous validation of the associated equipment and technologies.
In particular, it will offer the opportunity to test a wide range of equipment:
- Compatible smartphones and tablets (sensitivity evaluation, reception and software compatibility).
- Middleware and standalone software systems.
- Infrastructure equipment.
- Monetization technologies (individualized advertising, interactivity).
- Mobile applications.
A structuring certification process for the French audiovisual market
TDF has positioned itself as a key player in the validation and certification of 5G Broadcast equipment, based on international technological standards (3GPP, DVB) and feedback from the first pilot deployments.
The process is based on :
- Rigorous, modular test protocols to ensure compliance with technical standards.
- Evaluation of key criteria: signal robustness, reception sensitivity, energy efficiency and environmental impact.
- The award of a compliance label, guaranteeing manufacturers and publishers optimum interoperability for their services and equipment.
From R&D to market: accelerating commercial deployment
This platform will not be limited to technical validation: it also aims to support players in the gradual industrialization of equipment, with a view to large-scale deployment and increasing market adoption.
Thanks to this initiative, TDF and its partners will be able to explore concrete, end-to-end use cases that meet the expectations of publishers and new consumer habits, particularly among young and urban audiences, who are more inclined to watch content on smartphones and on the move.
Karim El Naggar, Managing Director Audiovisual and Networks at TDF, states:
"We are proud to announce that the 5G Broadcast platform is operational at our Les Lilas site. This breakthrough marks a crucial step in our commitment to provide cutting-edge solutions that meet the needs of our customers and partners. With this initiative, as a broadcast network operator, TDF confirms its pioneering role in the evolution of broadcast technologies and reaffirms its contribution to building the future of mobile TV, by federating the efforts of the industry: manufacturers of broadcast equipment, chipsets, terminals and suppliers of software solutions."
