On Wednesday June 25, TDF inaugurated a new solar farm at its Nordheim transmitter site in the Bas-Rhin region of France, in the presence of representatives of the Grand Est region, local public bodies and its partners.

Sixty years after the first pylon was installed to broadcast television to the Alsatian countryside, the Nordheim site continues its transformation and enters a new era: that of the energy transition.

A solar farm for local, sustainable and responsible energy

The second photovoltaic installation to be deployed by TDF, after the one at Coti in southern Corsica, this new solar farm marks a major step forward in the company's decarbonization strategy. It comprises 532 photovoltaic panels with a total output of 308 kWp, giving a production capacity of around 1.44 MWh on a sunny day. The electricity generated is consumed entirely on site.
This major project received financial support from the Grand-Est region.

A site at the heart of Alsace

Built in 1965 on the Stephansberg hill, the Nordheim site played a pioneering role in television access. Since then, the site has kept pace with major technological advances: FM radio, mobile telephony, the switch to Digital Terrestrial Television in 2010, then DTT in Ultra High Definition (UHD) quality since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
A true pillar of the broadcasting network in the Grand Est region, the Nordheim site covers, for audiovisual broadcasting, a radius of 70 kilometers and enables nearly two million people every day to receive Digital Terrestrial Television and radio. It is also a microwave relay for other complementary transmitters, and hosts antennas for cell phone operators.
Since the spring of 2025, the Nordheim site has been home to a herd of sheep, who maintain the site through eco-pasturing.

A responsible approach that continues

Following on from Nordheim, three new solar farms will see the light of day on TDF sites by the end of the year in Bourges, Rouen and Niort, before new projects from 2026. This strategy is part of a broader initiative to enhance the value of TDF's industrial real estate - with more than 8,800 sites across France - to strengthen the energy resilience of infrastructures, reduce carbon emissions, and support the transition of territories.
For 50 years, TDF has played a key role in France's digital development, and has assumed a social and environmental responsibility within French society. The company's mission is to guarantee fair and reliable access
and reliable access to digital services, while limiting the impact on resources. CSR translates into concrete environmental, social and governance actions, such as :

  • Optimization of energy consumption (installation of photovoltaic shades at the foot of pylons, construction of solar farms, installation of free cooling systems on production sites, etc.).
  • Biodiversity considerations (installation of nesting boxes for birds of prey on high-rise pylons, eco-pasturing, etc.).
  • Promoting diversity and solidarity, as well as quality of life and working conditions,
  • Preventing corruption.

"The Nordheim solar farm is a perfect illustration of our commitment to putting innovation and technology at the service of the energy transition. This project is part of a global strategy to enhance the value of our industrial heritage for the benefit of more local and responsible energy production. We would like to warmly thank the Grand-Est Region for its decisive support in making this initiative a reality. This project is just a first step: in the months to come, we will continue to deploy solar farms on other sites, with the same ambition to serve the regions", declared Jean-Louis Mounier, Managing Director of TDF TowerCo.
