TDF broadcasts the Grand Raid de la Reunion in UHD on digital terrestrial television

To mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Grand Raid de la Réunion, TDF is broadcasting the " Diagonale des fous " Ultra-Trail in Ultra High Definition (4K) on DTT in partnership with France Télévisions. From October 20 to 23, viewers on Réunion Island will be able to watch the program on the event channel Réunion 1ère Ultra HD, broadcast in Ultra High Definition on channel 81 of digital terrestrial television.

Just like the people of Reunion, viewers in mainland France (Paris, Nantes and Toulouse) will be able to enjoy this temporary channel and follow the event live with optimum sound and image quality on DTT channel 81. UHD technology offers image and sound definition four times superior to High Definition.

Technical precision and expertise

A technical expert and major player in the terrestrial digital platform, TDF broadcasts the channel to every home via its network of transmitters. On Reunion Island, TDF teams are carrying out the experiment from the Saint-Pierre-Hyacinthe and Saint-Denis-La Montagne TDF broadcasting sites. In mainland France, transmitters in the Paris region (Tour Eiffel, Chaville, Meaux and Chennevières-sur-Marne), Nantes-Haute-Goulaine and Toulouse-Lafilaire are being mobilized.

The experiment also uses broadcast and compression standards that are more efficient than current DTT standards (DVB-T2 and HEVC). Viewers with compatible televisions can take full advantage of UHD broadcasting on the event channel. To benefit from this service, users will need to perform an automatic or manual channel scan on their TV sets.

A decisive step towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Broadcasting the Grand Raid in UHD is a further milestone in the modernization of DTT in the run-up to the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
For several years, numerous broadcasts in UHD on TDF's experimental platform have enabled us to offer viewers major events in UHD, as well as to test new formats and technologies (content, sound, HDR, etc.), both in mainland France and overseas.

TDF pioneers DTT platform technology for all French citizens

Ready to drive the evolution of the DTT platform and driving this transformation, TDF is preparing for the arrival of UHD and continuing its experiments. For five years, TDF has been conducting tests from its Eiffel Tower facilities, extended to the Chennevières-sur-Marne, Meaux, Chaville, Nantes and Toulouse areas since 2018. In mainland France, DTT channels 81, 82 and 83 have become reference pilot channels broadcast in UHD quality.
To implement these transformations and accommodate UHD services, TDF is working on network optimization and, more specifically, on frequency resources and the introduction of new, more efficient broadcasting and compression standards.

DTT has come a long way since its inception. It has reinvented itself to meet French people's expectations in terms of picture quality, sound and services.

Free, anonymous and accessible to all, the DTT platform is a major means of television reception in France, with coverage of 97% of the population and 46% of households using it.
