TDF broadcasts Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) and FM and digital radio (DAB+) in France. A major player in audiovisual broadcasting, TDF operates more than 7,500 service points for DTT broadcasting throughout mainland France and the French overseas territories, for both national and local channels.
In radio, TDF broadcasts over 300 public and private radio programs to more than 4,800 service points in France.
TDF broadcasts Digital Terrestrial Television from its main transmitters all over France, backed up by additional transmitters for optimum coverage.
The terrestrial broadcasting platform enables around 97% of the French population to enjoy free, high-quality access to High Definition television.
Digital terrestrial television (DTT), the only universal, free, anonymous and simple broadcasting system, is one of the main ways of receiving television in France, with 52.5% of households using terrestrial reception*.
The geographical positioning and height of TDF's towers optimize coverage of radio services for its customers - local and national, public and private radio stations.
TDF puts its expertise at the service of every need: FM radio, digital (DAB+), signal transport, shortwave, synchronous radio on freeways, etc.
All you need to do is connect your TV set to your home's hertzian socket, connected to the rake antenna on the roof of your home. DTT is free, so you don't need Internet access or a special box.
Thanks to its geographical location and height (over 300m), the Eiffel Tower's DTT transmitter enables more than 12 million people in the Paris region to receive High Definition (HD) Digital Terrestrial Television - the whole of the Ile-de-France region!
DAB+ stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting, and is the European standard for digital terrestrial radio. With this technology, which is gradually being rolled out in France, 13 radio stations can be hosted on the same frequency, compared with just one at present. The signal is even more robust than FM radio, and so-called "indoor" areas (basements, tunnels, subways, etc.) can be covered. To receive radio via DAB+, you need a receiver adapted to this technology.
TDF engineers have been working on the arrival of UHD on DTT for several years. Experiments are regularly carried out, from the Eiffel Tower and several transmitters in France (Nantes, Toulouse), notably for retransmission of the Roland-Garros tournament. The first achievements are expected to materialize for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
