The TDF barometer on television reception modes and French access to digital terrestrial television (DTT), carried out by IFOP, confirms that DTT plays an essential role in television access for the vast majority of French people.

The study was conducted by IFOP for TDF via an online panel on a nationally representative sample of 3,000 individuals aged 18 and over.

A majority of French people use DTT to watch television.

62% of French people use the terrestrial platform to watch TV, 58% on their main TV set, with a further 4% using secondary sets only. Of these, 35% also have access to TV via fiber or ADSL.

The TDF barometer shows that the use of DTT to watch television, often underestimated in spontaneous declarations, actually concerns more than 6 out of 10 French people.

The French are attached to DTT.

57% of French people consider it important to receive DTT at home, and 68% of those with operational access would find it inconvenient to be deprived of it.

In the eyes of the French, DTT is an important, even indispensable, means of accessing television, despite the recent development of fiber. A large majority of French people want to keep DTT to watch TV at home. They are in favor of free, easy-to-use access to television, with high broadcast quality throughout the country thanks to DTT.

Karim El Naggar, Managing Director Audiovisual and Networks at TDF, comments: "This new study reaffirms the relevance of the DTT platform in the audiovisual sector. If French interest and attachment to digital terrestrial television remains so strong, it's because TDF and its partners have succeeded in making it a resilient technology that meets users' expectations and adapts to the latest innovations. In particular, the recent arrival of Ultra High Definition is a key milestone for DTT. Free, accessible to all and of the highest quality, the DTT platform represents a societal challenge for audiovisual and cultural creation. It's also a more environmentally-friendly and less energy-intensive way of receiving television than over the Internet. For all these reasons, TDF's teams have been working hard for years to contribute to its technological evolution.
