TDF to reduce its carbon footprint by equipping 100 telecom towers with photovoltaic shade systems by 2021

Confirming its commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR), TDF will be deploying photovoltaic shades at one hundred of its telecoms sites in 2021. The aim is to reduce energy consumption by 45 tonnes of CO2 per year.

A successful experiment

TDF has been working to optimize its energy expenditure for several years. In 2019, the company tested the development of photovoltaic shading on six production sites. To conduct this experiment, IoT (Internet of Things) sensors installed on the pylons precisely measured the energy actually produced by this system.

Data shows that the installation of shading systems generates savings of over 25% of a site's current energy requirements. TDF has therefore decided to industrialize this deployment at one hundred new sites by 2021, and estimates that it will save more than 45 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

A long-term industrial ambition

Thanks to its industrial capacity, the TDF Group is able to install the shading systems itself, using the skills of its subsidiary ITAS.
In the same vein, other studies are being carried out, such as the creation of solar farms for self-production and self-consumption of energy at certain major broadcasting and telecommunications sites.

This approach reflects the continuous improvement work carried out by all the company's departments and the special effort made to reduce the carbon footprint of broadcasting and telecommunications activities. It is part of an overall plan to optimize resources and energy expenditure.

In 2019, the TDF Group published its Corporate Social Responsibility policy, setting out its twelve commitments, structured around four priorities: i-connecting territories, ii-ensuring well-being at work, iii-being an ethical and civic-minded company and iv-protecting the environment. A CSR governance structure has been set up at the highest level of the company to steer performance and validate strategic CSR orientations. In addition, a member of the Global Compact since 2014, the TDF Group publishes its annual Communication on Progress.

Olivier Huart, Chairman and CEO of the TDF Group, states:

In the current context of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is affecting the whole world, issues linked to Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility are a priority. More than ever, our telecoms and broadcasting infrastructures are essential to maintaining and improving mobile and fixed-line coverage throughout the country. This achievement is an important step in realizing our ambition to reduce our carbon footprint. I can see how far our company has come in terms of sustainable development in recent years.
