Digital radio on the move

DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting Plus) is digital terrestrial radio that modernizes the listening experience by relying on the terrestrial network, like FM. This technology offers rich, high-quality listening , anonymously and free of charge, with no mobile data consumption, and complements the FM offering. It enriches the radio with associated data (titles, cover art, news) and provides better reception continuity, especially on the move.

Robustness against interference

Did you know?

  • The rollout of digital radio continues apace throughout France.
  • The coverage provides continuous, high-quality listening, whether at home, at work or on the road.
  • Today, DAB+ covers almost two-thirds of the population (65%) and half of France's communes (17,000 communes)*.
  • By 2026, all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants will be covered.
  • Eventually, 80-85% of the population of mainland France and Corsica will be able to benefit.
  • Coverage of major roads is gradually being extended (freeways, trunk roads, etc.) for car reception.

DAB+ coverage and broadcast radio stations

In DAB+, several radios (up to 13 services) are grouped together in a multiplex broadcast over a larger or smaller area on the same frequency. National multiplexes are designed to cover major roads and neighboring towns, extended multiplexes target regional areas, and local multiplexes serve smaller areas around a main conurbation (corresponding to the catchment areas defined by INSEE).

National multiplexes

ARCOM, the French regulatory authority for audiovisual and digital communications, has defined two national networks called M1 and M2, the "metropolitan" networks. The license is attributed to a multiplex and provides broad coverage of the French territory, like a DTT multiplex.

Extended and local multiplexes

A local multiplex corresponds to a population catchment area around a large city. An extended multiplex corresponds to an FM zone similar to that of a radio station such as "Ici".

The metropolitan area is divided into some forty extended allotments and over two hundred local allotments

The equipment to enjoy it

Your receiver (car radio, radio, hi-fi system, etc.) must be DAB+ compatible. Since the end of 2020, all radios with alphanumeric displays and car radios in new vehicles must be DAB+-compatible, in accordance with the law of March 5, 2007.

DAB+ can be used at home as well as in the car, offering optimum sound quality and a wider variety of stations, without the need for an Internet connection.
