TDF newsletter for local authorities - January 2025

TDF, 50 years of progress serving the French people and their communities

Since 1975, TDF has been at the side of the French, with a presence as discreet as it is essential in your daily life - whether in your living room, in the palm of your hand, at the bottom of your pocket or in your car. From radio to television, via fixed and mobile telecoms networks, TDF is at the heart of every technological advance. Through our strategic infrastructures - towers, pylons, datacenters - we contribute to connecting territories, in close collaboration with local authorities and their elected representatives, who play a key role in the development and modernization of networks. For 50 years, the men and women of TDF have been making this commitment to local communities a reality. Every day, they build essential, lasting links, supporting local authorities in their projects and guaranteeing a reliable, high-quality service. In 2025, TDF celebrates its 50th anniversary. To celebrate this half-century is above all to pay tribute to the history we have written with you, in every region, every town, every village. It's also a chance to showcase our collective heritage, our infrastructure that spans the country, and our role as a partner to local elected representatives in the fight against the digital divide and for connectivity that's accessible to all. Looking to the future also means reaffirming our conviction that, in an increasingly connected world, territories are at the heart of the challenges of inclusion and development. Together, with you and the local authorities, we will pursue our mission to connect the French people and their communities everywhere, faster. On behalf of TDF, I wish you all the best for 2025.

Mayotte: in the wake of the cyclone, TDF is working hard to bring its equipment back into service

Just a few days after Cyclone Chido devastated the territory of Mauritius, TDF's teams were operating under extreme conditions:

  • by re-establishing the broadcast of Mayotte 1ère,
  • working to re-establish state services
  • and commissioning an antenna for the Red Cross.

Although TDF's fleet of 62 sites was severely affected by the cyclone, the teams lost no time in starting the rebuilding effort.

To respond to the emergency and restore communication channels for the Mahorais as quickly as possible, TDF is taking action, aiming for full restoration of mobile networks and audiovisual channels by the end of the first quarter, and full, permanent restoration of its equipment by the summer.

Arson attack in the Rhône: TDF teams restore DTT services in record time

cenves tower

The last few hours of 2024 were no picnic for TDF's teams, who had to react urgently to an arson attack on the pylon in Cenves (69), near Mâcon (71).
Cables (feeders) burned several meters into the pylon, affecting the terrestrial network and interrupting the broadcast of many TV channels, including those of the France Télévisions group, for almost 800,000 viewers.

The cell phone network was also affected around the commune of Cenves.
Nevertheless, thanks to the unfailing commitment of TDF's teams, the network was restored in record time, less than 48 hours after the fire, enabling everyone to watch New Year's Eve on the small screen!
A complaint has been lodged and the investigation is still underway to identify the perpetrators. Material damage for TDF was limited, as the technical building was not affected and the tower remains sound, thanks to the fire-fighting measures deployed.

The Alps at the pinnacle of mobile connectivity

maurienne valley, savoie

In December, TDF had the pleasure of inaugurating a new telecommunications site, built by the Group to boost mobile coverage in the Alpine region, alongside the elected representatives and public authorities of the Maurienne Valley in Savoie.

The inauguration, organized by the Fédération française des Télécoms, took place in a convivial atmosphere in the presence of Valloire mayor Jean Pierre Rougeaux, sub-prefect of the Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne district Karima HUNAULT, Savoie departmental councillor for digital infrastructures Annick Cressens, and representatives of the four mobile operators.

TDF was honored to be present at the event, represented by Patrice Bargas, South-East Regional Director, and Serge Ferlay, Alps Heritage Manager.

Julien Ferderin appointed Regional Manager for Overseas France

At the end of December, Julien Ferderin took over as Regional Manager for Overseas France.

Having joined TDF in 2011 as purchasing project manager, Julien Ferderin has gradually broadened his skills, distinguishing himself in the fields of pre-sales, business development and the management of TDF's major projects in overseas France.
He succeeds François Boudé, who has left TDF to focus on new projects.
TDF is present throughout the French Overseas Territories: Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Reunion Island, Mayotte, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, as well as Wallis and Futuna and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.

TDF at SMCL: a 2024 edition rich in exchanges

Once again, TDF had the pleasure of meeting its partners, customers and local elected representatives at the Salon des maires et des collectivités territoriales in November.

Three intense days of inspiring meetings and exchanges. Whether you're looking to support your local digital development projects, deploy high-performance mobile connectivity within your buildings, or find the right balance between your digital infrastructure needs and the preservation of landscapes and biodiversity, TDF was there. Your presence and your feedback encourage us to pursue our mission: to support territories with innovative and responsible solutions.

Connectivity at the heart of SIMI's latest event

TDF was present at the French Real Estate Industry Show (SIMI), in Paris, to discuss with all the players in the ecosystem the importance of 4G and 5G connectivity for building intelligent, sustainable and high-performance buildings.

In fact, this was the theme of the cocktail party co-organized by TDF and the SBA (Smart Buildings Alliance): a great moment of conviviality and sharing of ideas with a view to building the city of tomorrow.

Zoom on... the Mont Pilat site, the "Pioneer of Waves".

mount pilat
At 1,364 meters, Crêt de L'Œillon is the second highest peak in the Pilat massif, south of Saint-Etienne in the Loire department. In 1955, the height of Mont Pilat played a decisive role in the decision to locate a television transmitter here, to cover the entire Rhone valley as far as Marseille. Installed in 1955 and equipped with an 80-meter tower, this transmitter is one of France's major broadcasting sites. From this site, TDF transmits and broadcasts radio and DTT for more than a million people in the area, as well as hosting antennas for mobile operators.

In figures

50

is the number of candles TDF will be blowing out in 2025! In 1975, the break-up of ORTF gave rise to several autonomous entities, including TDF, responsible for broadcasting radio and television signals in France, while others, such as France Télévisions, Radio France and TF1, focused on program production and management.

4

is the number of TDF sites now labeled "Remarkable Contemporary Architecture" since this distinction was awarded to the historic transmitter site at Allouis, in the Cher department. This honorary title recognizes the value of TDF's industrial heritage.

160%

is the predicted increase in energy consumption by data centers between now and 2030 - a staggering rise that TDF is anticipating by equipping its data centers with advanced cooling systems capable of reducing energy consumption by up to 45% compared with traditional air-cooled systems, in order to promote ever greener, more responsible digital technology.
