TDF newsletter for local authorities - November 2024

Give life to your projects for the digital territories of tomorrow

As an infrastructure operator that has always been committed to working alongside local authorities, TDF aims to be a leading partner for local and regional authorities, supporting their digital development and growth.

In a constantly evolving world, full of opportunities but also numerous constraints and uncertainties, digital technology must position itself as an essential solution for optimizing territorial management. It is by leading the major digital transition projects that we will be able to build attractive, sustainable and resilient territories.

That's why at TDF, we're committed to aligning ourselves with your specific needs in order to foster the development of your regions. Whether it's the widespread rollout of fiber optics, the deployment of 5G, the construction of local datacenters or the implementation of IoT networks, we act to meet the challenges that are yours today.

We look forward to meeting you on the TDF stand at the Salon des Maires et des Collectivités locales, in Paris from November 19 to 21. You'll be able to meet your contacts and tell us about your digital projects that we can work on together.

With a presence throughout France, we're determined to meet you, because together we'll be shaping a digital future that benefits us all.

TDF presents 5G broadcast television

Still little-known to the general public, 5G Broadcast makes it possible to watch TV on a smartphone free of charge, without a subscription or SIM card. Throughout the summer, TDF introduced technology to a panel of users, giving them a sneak previewn preview of this new way of watching TV which, in the years to come, will enable everyone to receive TV programs with unrivalled picture quality and fluidity, even without a subscription. TDF opens the doors of its radio tower in Les Lilas for the 2024 Olympics

european heritage days

On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, TDF opened its historic site in Les Lilas, Seine-Saint-Denis, to the general public for the first time. In French Guiana, TDF is committed to protecting turtles

Because TDF is committed to digital development and ecosystem preservation, we decided to join forces with WWF Guyane to better understand and protect olive ridley turtles. As part of the YanaRiba project, an antenna installed on our pylon at l'Ilet-la-Mère has made it possible to track turtles equipped with GPS beacons, and thus identify the areas where they stay between laying their eggs, in order to preserve the species' birth rate. Eventually, local fishermen will even be able to be alerted in real time to the presence of these emblematic animals on the Guyanese coast, to avoid accidental catches. A fine example of the use of technology in the service of the environment and biodiversity.

TDF's Allouis site honored for outstanding contemporary architecture

The TDF transmitter site at Allouis (18) was officially recognized as "Remarkable Contemporary Architecture" at a ceremony organized by the Prefecture of the Centre-Val-de-Loire region. Built in 1939, this emblematic site plays a key role in longwave broadcasting and the transmission of time signals based on an atomic clock, ensuring the synchronization of French legal time throughout mainland France.

The Congress of French Regions: a not-to-be-missed event!

As every year, TDF was delighted to take part in the Congrès des Régions de France, held this year in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). Alongside SNCF Gares & Connexions and Kéolis, we took part in a round table discussion on "Connected stations and Open payment: towards simplified mobility for users", organized in partnership with Crédit Mutuel. It was an opportunity to discuss the importance of connectivity in stations and innovative payment solutions to facilitate travel for citizens. TDF is playing a crucial role in the deployment of mobile connectivity inside stations: thanks to our partnership with SNCF Gares & Connexions, we have already equipped more than 60 stations across France, and will reach the 100 mark by mid-2025.

H'Expo 2024: TDF, a loyal partner of social landlords

TDF was present in Montpellier (34) for the H'expo trade show, the meeting place for players in the social housing sector. As a telecoms infrastructure operator, the Group was able to present its various solutions to social landlords, including the installation of cell phone antennas on the roof terraces of their buildings. A solution that contributes to the financial situation of social landlords, while optimizing cell phone coverage of the region.

TDF took part in the Congrès des Maires Ruraux de France (French rural mayors' congress)

TDF teams were delighted to take part in the Congrès national des Maires Ruraux de France, which took place from September 27 to 29 at Saint-Julien in the Côte-d'Or region. An unmissable event for our Group, historically linked to rural areas: since its creation, TDF has been helping rural communities with their development and planning, and supporting their initiatives to improve digital inclusion.
These two days provided an opportunity to discuss with numerous mayors the many issues they face on a daily basis, in a spirit of cooperation, and in search of concrete solutions for the development of their territories.

Fiber: TDF meets Anjou's elected representatives

The salon des maires du Maine-et-Loire was an opportunity for TDF to talk to local elected officials about the many issues involved in digital development and the widespread deployment of fiber. As a stakeholder in the Syndicat Mixte Anjou Numérique, TDF has supported the rollout of nearly 230,000 fiber-connectable outlets in rural areas of Maine-et-Loire. Access to ultra-high-speed broadband has become an essential tool for local authorities and businesses alike, and is becoming increasingly popular. TDF took advantage of this special day to remind everyone of its full commitment to the digital transformation of territories.

Focus on... The "Imperator" site at La Rhune

la rhune site
An emblematic site in the Basque country, 4 km from Ascain and 20 km from Bayonne, perched at 905 meters above sea level, the La Rhune site marks the border between France and Spain, and offers a breathtaking panorama from the Landes to the Pyrénées-Orientales. After briefly hosting the Hôtel Impérator in the 1920s, the site attracted the attention of ORTF, which relayed the broadcasts of the 1st channel to La Rhune, before installing a transmitter in the old hotel. Over time, the relay center expanded, and today houses television, FM radio and telephone transmitters, serving all the inhabitants of the Basque Country. Since 2023, TDF has been broadcasting DAB+ digital radio from the same site.

In figures

10%
This is the proportion of premises, homes and businesses, that have yet to be connected to fiber, according to Arcep President Laure de La Raudière, who deplored a "sharp slowdown in rollouts" at the latest annual meeting of Territoires connectées, before raising the possibility of "postponing the timetable" for the closure of the copper network, initially scheduled for 2030.

74%

This is the number of French people (50 million of them) who were able to watch the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games in Ultra High Definition (UHD) via DTT on France 2 and France 3, a technological breakthrough in which TDF took part by deploying the transmitters needed to implement this television revolution throughout France.

1000

This is the volume of TeraWatt-hours of electricity that could be consumed by data centers worldwide by 2026 (a proportion equivalent to Japan's consumption), according to the International Energy Agency, which is observing an unprecedented rise in data center consumption due to the dual effect of their multiplication and the growing use of artificial intelligence, which is particularly energy-intensive.
