Construction of the TDF Tower in Les Lilas (93) in 1981

50 years of TDF history

The TDF tower in Romainville, often referred to as the "Eiffel Tower of 93", is an emblematic monument in Seine-Saint-Denis. It is a beacon of technology and architecture, symbolizing innovation and broadcasting in the region. In 1977, TDF (TéléDiffusion de France) chose the Fort de Romainville site in the commune of Les Lilas to build a tower for radio and television broadcasting. Construction began in 1980 under the direction of architect Claude Vasconi, also known for the first Forum des Halles.

The work involved is complex, including the manufacture and installation of the three rings at the top of the tower, which are hoisted using powerful jacks. The tower is 141 metres high and built in prestressed concrete. The tower was completed in 1984 and commissioned in 1986, replacing the TDF site at Buttes-Chaumont in Paris. The operations center - now the NOC - moves from Buttes Chaumont to Les Lilas, on the other side of the Paris ring road.
