Mobile TV becomes a reality. After radio, the telephone, the internet, and even cinema – thanks to portable video players – it is finally television’s turn to go down the mobile route! TDF, which has been active since 2000 in forums, R&D projects and standardization bodies, is continuing to work to make mobile TV a reality in Europe. Although outlooks vary according to country, the operational phase for mobile TV is now underway.
Originally designed to carry the voice, mobile telephones have evolved tremendously. Their constantly increasing capabilities (processor, memory, screen size and resolution, battery power, etc.) are now permitting the development of specific multimedia applications.
Based on its experience and expertise, TDF is naturally positioning itself to operate radio and TV broadcasts to mobile devices. Furthermore, its “Cognacq-Jay Image" subsidiary, which already offers video formatting and encoding services for GPRS and 3G mobiles, is positioned on services of the same type in television and radio to mobiles.
